Engine and Cabin Air Filters: When to Replace

Two Filters, Two Different Jobs

Your car has two air filters most drivers don't think about until something feels off — reduced acceleration, weak AC airflow, or a musty smell inside the cabin. Both are cheap to fix and easy to overlook.

Engine Air Filter vs. Cabin Air Filter

They sound similar but do completely different things:

How Often Should You Replace Them?

A common guideline is every 15,000 to 30,000 miles for the engine air filter, and every 15,000 to 25,000 miles for the cabin filter. But driving in areas with heavier traffic or dusty roads can shorten that interval. If you commute through Concord, Pleasant Hill, or Clayton regularly, it's worth checking both at your next oil change.

Q: Can a dirty engine air filter cause a check engine light?

It can. A severely restricted filter can trigger a mass airflow sensor code. If your check engine light is on, engine diagnostics start at $195 — but catching a clogged filter early usually keeps it from ever getting to that point.
